10th APRIL 2000
The Annual General Meeting will be
held on Wednesday 24th May, at St Paul's Hall, Ramsey, commencing at
7.30pm. It is intended to hold subscriptions at £2 for adults and
£1 for juniors, and these can be paid now to the Treasurer.
Once again, it is planned that the Queen's Pier
will be opened for public access on 29th July, which will coincide
with the RNLI celebrations in the town. As many of you will know,
last year proved to be a very successful weekend for Ramsey in
general, and the pier in particular, with over two thousand people
taking the opportunity to walk part of the way down it. Watch the
press for further details.
Last year we advised that we had written to Mr
Tony Brown MHK, the Minister for Transport, letting him have a copy
of the report that we had commissioned from the BWB Partnership.
Copies have been sent to other MHK's as well.
Since then, certain government officials have
visited Llandudno, to examine the pier there, and to discuss matters
with appropriate parties. We understand that since that trip, there
have been a number of other meetings involving governmental
departments. Mr Brown has said that he hopes to be in a position to
make an announcement on the pier's future shortly, and that he hopes
to be able to attend the AGM, but if he is unable to so, he will let
us have a written progress report.
At the charity's last meeting, our chairman Mr
John May, announced that he would be standing down. Jack as he is
better known, and his late wife Ivy, were the founders of the
society some six years ago, and worked tirelessly to ensure that the
Queens Pier remains a prominent landmark in the north of the island.
Our sincerest thanks go to Jack.
The election of officials and committee members
will take place at the AGM. Please make every effort to attend the
meeting, as it is public support that is needed to persuade the
politicians that the Queens Pier should be refurbished.
After all the earlier reports, and given the
current position, we believe that it is very important that members
show their commitment, as it may be that a decision on the pier's
future will be made soon.
One final matter, we should like to extend our
warmest congratulations to our patron on being knighted last year,
well done Sir Norman.
